The communication followed Trump’s announcement of new tariffs and took place in the broader context of major global issues – Greenland, Gaza, and the war in Ukraine. I am getting in touch regarding transatlantic contact, concerning Greenland, Gaza, Ukraine, and your announcement of tariffs yesterday.

You know our position on these issues. Nevertheless, we believe that we should all work to stop and de-escalate the situation – there is so much happening around us where we must stand together. “Dear Jonas:
Given that your country has decided not to award me the Nobel Peace Prize for stopping eight wars, plus others, I no longer feel obligated to think exclusively about peace. While peace will always be dominant, I can now also think about what is good and right for the United States of America.

Denmark cannot protect that country from Russia or China, and why do they even have ‘ownership rights’? There are no written documents – it is only known that one ship landed there hundreds of years ago, but we also had ships that landed there. I have done more for NATO than any other person since its founding, and now NATO should do something for the United States.

The world will not be safe unless we have complete and total control of Greenland. Thank you!

As previously reported by the BBC, the Norwegian prime minister later clarified the context of the message he received from Trump. Støre explained that he received Trump’s message on Sunday afternoon, in response to the fact that he and the Finnish president had expressed opposition to the increase in tariffs. He added that Trump subsequently decided to share the content of the message with other NATO leaders.

“Norway’s position on Greenland is clear. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and Norway fully supports Denmark on this issue,” Støre stated.

He also addressed the Nobel Peace Prize issue in conclusion: “Regarding the Nobel Peace Prize, I have clearly explained – including to President Trump – that the prize is awarded by an independent Nobel Committee, not by the Norwegian government.”
